  MASALA FISH FRY

INGREDIENTS

  • Fish – 300 gms
  • Onion – 1
  • Tomato – 1
  • Ginger garlic paste – 1 tsp
  • Red chilli pwdr – 1 ½ tsp
  • Turmeric pwdr – ¼ tsp
  • Coriander pwdr – 2 tsp
  • Garam masala – ¼ tsp [ optional ]
  • Tamarind – marble size
  • Curry leaves – few
  • Oil – 1 ½ tbsp
  • Fenugreek seeds – ¼ tsp
  • Coriander leaves finely chopped for garnish
  • Salt to taste

PREPARATION .

  1. Clean, wash and rinse the fish. Marinate with little salt and turmeric and keep aside for sometime.
  2. Soak tamarind in hot water and extract juice.
  3. Make a fine paste of onion + tomato + ginger garlic paste.

METHOD

Heat oil in a pan, add fenugreek seeds and fry for few secs .[ it should not burn else it will give a bitter flavour to the food.

Add curry leaves + the paste .

Stir fry till raw smell leaves and oil separates .

Add chilli pwdr + turmeric + garam masala + coriander powder  and fry.

Add tamarind juice and mix well and cook for 1 min.

Add  ½ cup of water + salt and allow it to boil.

Once it starts boiling ,lower the flame to medium low.

Now add the fish pieces, cover and cook for 5 mins.

Now turn the fishes and again cover and cook for 5 mins.

Now open the lid and cook till complete water evaporates and oil appears on the sides.

Off the flame and garnish with more curry leaves and coriander leaves.

Serve as a side dish.

NOTES

  1. Instead of tamarind you can use kokam ,lemon or vinegar.
  2. Adjust masalas as per your taste.
  3. I used one big slice of surmai which was more than 300 gms.
  4. Use fish of your choice.
  5. Same recipe for prawns or crab.
