Tinda with chana dal

                      TINDA / INDIAN ROUND GOURD /INDIAN BABY PUMPKIN OR SQUASH WITH CHANA DAL

inda, also called Indian squash, round melon, Indian round gourd or apple gourd or Indian baby pumpkin, is a squash-like cucurbit grown for its immature fruit, a vegetable especially popular in South Asia. 

When immature, the skin will be thin and edible, but when overly mature, the skin will turn thick and tough to eat. The white flesh is tender, moist, and spongy and contains many small, edible, cream-colored to pale yellow seeds. When fresh, Tinda is soft with a mild flavor similar to a cucumber.

Tinda / indian round gourd /indian baby pumpkin or squash with chana dal

INGREDIENTS

  • Tender Tinda / apple gourd – 250 gms
  • Chana dal – ½ cup
  • Jeera – 1 tsp
  • Fennel seeds / jeera – ½ tsp
  • Onion chopped – 1
  • Tomato puree – 1 big
  • Ginger garlic paste – 1 tsp
  • Asafoetida – a pinch
  • Red chilli pwdr – 1 1/2 tsp or as per taste
  • Turmeric pwdr – ¼ tsp
  • Coriander pwdr – 2 tsp
  • Kitchen king masala – 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves – few [ optional ]
  • Oil + ghee – 1 tbsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Sugar – 1/2 tsp

PREPARATION

  1. Peel the tinda and chop it .I chopped it into small pieces ,you can just chop each tinda into 4 . If any hard seeds discard .
  2. Clean ,wash ,rinse and soak the dal for few hours or overnight .

METHOD

Heat oil in a pressure cooker.

Add fennel seeds + jeera and let them crackle .

Add onion + curry + asafoetida and fry till light brown .

Add ginger garlic paste and fry till raw smell leaves.

Add tomato puree and fry till oil separates.

Add chilli pwdr + turmeric pwdr + coriander pwdr + kitchen king masala + salt + sugar and fry for few secs.

Add soaked chana dal , mix well and fry for a min .

Add the chopped tindas and mix well

Add 2 or 2 1 /2 cups or as required water and mix well.

Close the cooker and pressure cook for 3 or 4 whistles till the dal is soft. Don’t overcook till mushy.

Let the pressure release .

Open and mix well garnish with coriander leaves .

If it is very watery ,simmer on low flame till desired consistency .

Serve with rice or phulkas .

NOTES

  1. Y not try with sambar masala pwdr .
  2. Instead of chana dal try tuvar dal .
