Tomato gotsu aka thakkali gotsu is a perfect accompaniment for fluffy idlys and it can be made in no time.
Simple side dish made using onions and tomatoes which goes well with idli, dosa, Pongal ,upma and with any tiffin recipes.
Tomato gotsu is an excellent side dish for southindian breakfast items .this recipe is very easy / quick and instant .This recipe doesn’t need much preparation, its an instant recipe .
The taste will be similar to sambar as well as tomato chutney .
This gothsu is different from the tomato gothsu made in North parts of Tamilnadu with moong dal. This gravy is very simple & easy to make, but it has a unique taste and a keeper recipe. Do try this once to fall in love with this Gothsu.
Add tomato puree + salt + jiggery and stir fry for a minute .
Add water mix well.
Allow to boil .
Once it starts boiling reduce flame to low and cook for 1 or 2 mins .
Finally garnish with coriander leaves .
Serve with idli or dosa or any southindian breakfast .
NOTES
Usually people use chopped tomatoes , but I have used pureed tomatoes .So that kids don’t make fuss .
Actually in Tanjore, the same gosthu is also made with finely chopped brinjals. Instead of tomato, they add tamarind pulp.
It has to be watery .
Mostly people add cooked moong dal .
You can either use green chilli or red chilli pwdr .Adjust accordingly .
I have used besan as thickening agent ,people in south add idli batter .for this recipe you can add 2 tsp of idli batter.
Even some add 2 tsp of rice mixed with 1 tbsp water to thicken the gravy .
VARIATION TO THIS RECIPE FOR DIFFERENT TASTE- replace sambar pwdr with ½ tsp garam masala pwdr and aslo saute ½ tsp ginger garlic paste after frying onions.
