        CHANA DAL STIR FRY / CHANA DAL SUNDAL

INGREDIENTS

  • Chana dal – 1 cup
  • Oil – 1 tbsp
  • Red chilli – 3 broken
  • Freshly grated coconut – 3 or 4 tbsp
  • Mustard seed + urad dal – 1 ½ tsp
  • Curry leaves – few
  • Asafoetida – a generous pinch
  • Salt to taste

PREPARATION

  1. Clean , pick ,wash and rinse the dal.
  2. Soak it for minimum 2 hours or more.
  3. Pressure cook the dal with salt for 1 or 2 whistles OR boil 4 cup of water + salt and add the soaked the chana dal and cook till soft [ 8 – 10 mins ]
  4. Don’t overcook it ,the dal has to be soft and whole not mushy.[ better to cook in open pan than in cooker ]
  5. Drain the excess water and keep aside.

METHOD

Heat oil in a pan add the mustard seeds + urad dal and fry for few seconds till seeds crackle and dal becomes light brown.

Add curry leaves + red chilli + asafoetida and fry.

Add the cooked and mix well.

Adjust salt if required .

Add grated coconut and stir fry for a minute.

You can garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves also .

Serve hot.

NOTES

  1. Try cooking in pan instead of pressure cooker.
  2. I had soaked it for 5 hrs .
  3. Instead of red chilli ,you can add chopped green chilli .
  4. Y not add 1 tsp of grated ginger.
  5. Soaking is must ,it save cooking time.
  6. Using coconut oil enhances the flavour.
