PEANUT CHUTNEY FOR IDLI AND DOSA / PEANUT CHUTNEY WITHOUT COCONUT

Peanuts are as popular as they are healthy. They’re an excellent plant-based source of protein and high in various vitamins, minerals, and plant compounds. They can be useful as a part of a weight loss diet and may reduce your risk of both heart disease and gallstones . If you eat peanuts every day you get protein, vitamins, minerals, and more! Peanuts have more protein than any nut (7g per serving), containing more than 30 essential vitamins and minerals, and are a good source of fiber and good fats.

This is prepared from roasted peanuts and is a perfect side dish for idli, dosa and all varieties of upma. It is easy to make and needs very less ingredients. This chutney is so delicious that you will end up eating more idlis and dosas than usual.

Peanut chutney also known as groundnut chutney/Kadlekai chutney/ Verkadalai chutney/ Palli chutney. U can make any number of variations in this chutney.

INGREDIENTS

  • Peanuts – ½ cup
  • Green chilli – 3 or 4 or as per taste
  • Garlic – 1 or 2
  • Salt
  • Oil – 2 tsp
  • Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
  • Curry leaves – few

PREPARATION

Dry roast peanuts till nice aroma rises and they turn slightly browned . Roast the peanuts on low flame. It crackles as soon as it is roasted. Switch off the flame and leave it in hot kadai to become crispy. [ takes 8 to 10 mins ]

Allow to cool , rub and remove the skin.

METHOD

Take roasted peanut + green chilli + garlic + salt and grind without water.

Now add ½ to ¾ cup water and grind.

Transfer to serving bowl.

Prepare tempering and pour over the chutney and give a mix .

Serve with Southindian breakfast .

NOTE

  • Adding garlic is optional, if you like garlic flavour dont skip it.
  • Roast 1 tbsp of chana dal in little oil and add while grinding.
  • Instead of water , some add milk while grinding .It gives white colour to your chutney
  • Some add a small piece of tamarind. It gives a slightly tangy taste to the chutney as peanuts gives a sweet taste.
  • Instead of green chillies , we can use red chilli .
  • We can also add ½ cup fresh coriander leaves .
  • Some don’t removing skin too, But I feel a slight bitter taste so always remove the skin.
  • Another variation is you can add ¼ cup fresh .
  • Variation – we can add a small sautéed onion [ shallots ]
  • You can adjust the consistency of the chutney by adding more or less water.
