RAW PAPAYA STIR FRY / RAW PAPAYA PORIYAL

Papaya as we all know, is loaded with health benefits. Raw/green papaya is even more beneficial. It contains papain, a powerful enzyme that can greatly aid in the digestive process. It also soothes inflammation and helps relieve certain skin conditions. It helps relieve constipation as it is high in fiber content. Apart from that raw papaya also has many vital nutrients such as potassium, magnesium,  vitamins A, B, C and E. In spite of its health benefits, not many use raw papaya in cooking though it is very delicious.

INGREDIENTS

Raw Papaya – 4 cups grated
Turmeric powder – ¼  tsp
Salt needed

Freshly grated coconut – ½ cup
Green chilli – 2
Cumin seeds – ¼  tsp

Oil – 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
Urad dal – ½  tsp
Curry leaves few

  • I have grated the papaya , as it takes time to cook .

METHOD

Peel the skin, discard the seeds and grate papaya.

Pulse beat cumin seeds + green chilli + grated coconut without adding water.

Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds + urad.

When mustard seeds splutters, red chilli + curry leaves.

Let the dal turn golden brown, add the grated raw papaya + turmeric powder.

Mix well and stir fry for 4 to 5 mins.

Sprinkle ¼ cup water all over and cook covered.

Stir in between from time to time.

It takes time to cook .

Taste and check whether it is cooked and the raw papaya smell should vanish .

Once cooked, add salt + ground coconut mixture.

Mix well and stir fry for a minute and off the flame .

Serve as accompaniment with rice + sambar/ dal /rasam .

NOTE

  1. If you think your papaya is a little bitter , add a pinch of sugar while cooking.
  2. Make sure to slice the green skin part properly.
