Buttermilk, also called ‘Chaach’ or ‘Chaas’, isn’t just about quenching your thirst or uplifting your mood. This humble drink is loaded with essential nutrients and provides a host of miraculous health benefits, including weight loss.
Masala Chaas is an everyday affair and most of us drink it every day especially in Summers, as it helps cools down your body and also helps in the digestion process. Whether it’s summer or winter, it is safe to have it daily. But if you live in humid places, it is not advisable to have it so often, as it may cause cold.
It helps soothe an irritated stomach lining after a spicy meal. – It helps in washing down the fats which you may have consumed in a heavy meal. – It is a good source of calcium and can also be had by lactose intolerant people, who have to skip on milk. – It is vitamin dense and hence, very healthy.
Buttermilk is high in potassium, vitamin B12, calcium, and riboflavin as well as a good source of phosphorus.

INGREDIENTS
- Coriander seeds – ½ cup
- Jeera – ½ cup
- Black pepper- 2 tsp
- Ajwain – 1 tsp
- Cinnamon – small piece
- Asafoetida / hing – ½ tsp
- Dry mint / pudhina leaves – 2 tbsp
- Aamchur powder / dry mango powder – 1 tsp
- Black salt – ½ cup
METHOD
Heat a thick bottom pan.
Lower the flame ,add coriander seeds + jeera + black pepper + cinnamon + ajwain .
Dry roast on low flame for 3 to 4 mins.
Roast till crisp , colour should not change .
Allow it to cool for 5 mins in the same pan .
Add the mint leaves + asafoetida + aamchur powder + black salt and give a nic mix.
Once it cools down properly , transfer to mixie jar .
Grind into fine powder .
Sieve it .
Transfer to a air tight container .
You can store chaas masala for up to a year in an air-tight container up to a year.
A glass of buttermilk in the morning on an empty stomach can help in keeping all your gastrointestinal worries away. People who suffer from indigestion, gas, and other digestive problems should drink buttermilk in the morning, on an empty stomach.
HOW TO USE – Spiced buttermilk
Make chaas by blending 1 cup curd + 21/2 or 3 cup water .
For 1 cup chaas , add 1 tsp of masala powder and mix well.
Adjust salt if needed .[ optional ]
NOTES
- Keep in mind that it tastes best when served chilled.
- It is better to avoid it at night during dinner.
- If serving chaas right away, then always use chilled yogurt and chilled water or add few cubes of ice. If not serving right away then store it in the refrigerator.
- At the time of serving, stir the chaas first and then pour into the glass.
Scientists found that drinking buttermilk lowered blood pressure when had on a daily basis. Protein is an important part of our body and is necessary for strong bones, muscles, and skin. One cup of buttermilk has 8.1 grams of protein, which is about the same as one cup of low-fat milk.
