SOFT POHA IDLI

INGREDIENTS

  • Idli rice – 1 ½ cup
  • White fat poha – 1 cup [ not thin one ]
  • Whole skinless urad dal – ¾ cup
  • Salt to taste

PREPARATION

  1. Clean ,wash and soak the rice for 5 – 6 hrs .
  2. Clean ,wash and soak the dal for 3 – 4 hrs.
  3. Clean ,wash and the soak poha for 30 mins or 1 hr.
  4. Drain the excess water from the dal and grind it to a fine paste .[ tip ***if adding water while grinding dal ,use chilled water ] .Transfer the batter to a steel container.
  5. Drain the excess water from the rice and poha .[ lightly squeeze the excess water from the poha ] Now take both and grind without water first .Now add little water if required and grind it to a fine paste [ rice batter will not be smooth ,it will be of gritty  texture ].Now pour this in the same container with the dal paste .[ idli batter should not be thin ,itshould be bit of thick consistency ]
  6. Add salt and mix well with clean hands .Cover and keep aside for fermentation for 10 –  12 hrs in a warm place .

METHOD

After fermentation , again mix well .

Keep the idli steamer with water to boil.

Grease the idli mould and pour in the batter .

Keep the idli stand in the steamer after the water boils .

Steam for 10 mins .

Allow it to rest for 2 mins .

Demould and serve with any south Indian accompaniments like chutney and sambar

These idlis remains soft till evening.

With same batter I made uttappa ,crispy dosa and appe .

NOTES

  2. Be carefull while adding water while grinding rice and poha ,the poha has absorbed water ,so it requires less water for grinding .
  3. Y not replace poha with murmura [ puffed rice ] or already cooked rice .
  4. Very soon would try idli with basmati rice instead of idli rice for variation .
