INGREDIENTS

  • Rava – 1 cup
  • Yellow moong dal – ½ cup
  • Ghee + oil – 4 or 5 tbsp
  • Black pepper – 1 ½ or 2 tsp
  • Jeera – 11/2
  • Cashew broken – 12
  • Ginger grated – 1 tbsp
  • Green chilli – 2
  • Curry leaves – few
  • Asafoetida – a generous pinch
  • Salt to taste

PREPARATION

  1. Dry roast the rava .
  2. Dry roast the moong dal for sometime till it becomes aromatic .[ colour should not change much ]
  3. Pressure cook it with 2 cup of water till soft .

METHOD

Heat ghee in a pan, add black pepper + jeera and fry for few seconds till it crackles .

Add the cashew and stir fry till golden.

Add the ginger + green chilli + curry leaves + asafoetida and fry for few seconds.

Add cooked dal  and mix well.

add 2 1/2 cup water and salt and mix well .

once it starts boiling ,slowly sprinkle and add roasted rava and keep stirring .

Keep stirring so that lumps are not formed .

Cover and cook for 2 minutes till it is cooked and it comes together as a mass..

While cooking stir in between.

Once done off the flame , add 1 tbsp ghee and mix.

cover and let it rest for a minute before you serve.

Serve hot with any SouthIndian accompaniments like sambar ,chutney etc.

NOTES .

  1. Ghee is must for Pongal , don’t reduce .
