Kara [ spicy ] chutney
KARA [ SPICY ] CHUTNEY
INGREDIENTS
- Onion roughly chopped – 1
- Tomato roughly chopped – 1
- Red chilli – 5 or 6 or as per taste
- Garlic – 2 or 3 clove
- Chana dal – 1 tbsp
- Pepper corns – ½ tsp [optional ]
- Oil – 1 tsp + 2 tsp
- Curry leaves – few
- Tamarind – a tiny piece [ optional ]
- Mustard seeds + urad dal – 1 tsp
METHOD
Heat 1 tsp oil in a pan ,add chana dal and roast till golden [don’t burn ]
Then add red chillis + black pepper + garlic + onion + tomato + curry leaves and fry till tomatoes turn soft . [add each ingredient and roast for sometime ,then add the other – one by one as shown in pic ]
Allow it to cool .
Take this mixture in a mixie jar with salt + tamarind .
Grind it to a fine paste .
****While grinding add 1 or 2 tbsp of water .
Transfer the chutney to a serving bowl.
Heat 2 tsp oil in a small pan ,add mustard seed + urad dal + curry leaves and fry for few seconds .
Add this tempering into the chutney and mix well .
Serve as accompaniment for SouthIndian breakfast .
NOTES
- The chutney is a SouthIndian dish ,it is known for its hotness – also named as kara chutney – kara means hot .
- You can avoid pepper corns and increase red chilli .
- To make it more spicy you can add green chilli aslo .
- I did not make it very spicy , as my kids don’t prefer .
