Demerara sugar dalgona / Brown sugar dalgona recipe
DEMERARA SUGAR DALGONA / BROWN SUGAR DALGONA
Dalgona coffee is a beverage made by whipping equal proportions of instant coffee, sugar and hot water until it becomes creamy and then adding it to cold or hot milk. Occasionally, it is topped with instant coffee, cocoa, crumbled biscuits, honeycomb, etc. The beverage’s origins can be traced to the Indian subcontinent, where it is called phenti hui (“beaten coffee”, “whipped coffee”), and has long been popular there before being viral on social media Its viral status on social media came as a result of Jung Il-woo, a South Korean actor who visited an eatery in Macau where he was served a similar beverage reminding him of “dalgona,” a type of nostalgic Korean honeycomb, and later presented on a South Korean TV show called Stars’ Top Recipe at Fun-Staurant Under the hashtag #dalgonacoffeechallenge, homemade versions of dalgona coffee began spreading on South Korean YouTube channels before going viral on TikTok. Whipped coffee gained popularity as “dalgona coffee” during the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic when many governments began campaigns to promote isolation and social distancing. Dalgona Coffee gets its name from the fluffy, toffee-like texture of the coffee when whipped into foam. The spike in interest during the quarantine period has been attributed to the calming, ASMR-like effects of watching online DIY videos. In India, Dalgona coffee has become really popular in the past few months. People there are preferring the frost on cold milk rather than hot milk. It even has Gifs made by some people on social media like Instagram.
