The Gopalkala Recipe is a popular offering to Lord Krishna on Janmashtami. It is a savory dish made of beaten rice, cucumbers, green chilies, coconut and the tempering is done using ghee. The recipe is similar to curd rice, the only difference is beaten rice is used.
This is mainly distributed as prashad during Dahi Handi . Hence GopalKala is one of the main offering to Lord Krishna on next day following Janmashtami. Gopalkala is also put inside Dahi Handi before breaking the pot.
Gopalkala not just a scrumptious dish but is also very nutritive, this can be prepared in 5 minutes. It is a very simple,delicious no cook recipe .
INGREDIENTS
- 1 cup fresh curd [ not sour]
- 1 cup Poha
- ½ cup puffed rice /murmura
- ¼ cup jawar lahya / Puffed jawar
- 1/2cup Milk
- 1cup Cucumber finely chopped
- 3tbsp Pomegranate pearls
- 2 tsp chana dal soaked for 2 hours
- 1tsp sugar
- 3tbsp Fresh Coriander
- 1 tsp grated ginger
- 1 finely chopped green chilli
- 3tbsp Freshly grated Coconut
- Salt
METHOD
Wash and soak poha in water for 2 minutes and then drain and keep in a bowl,
Dry roast for a minute in a pan.
Take milk and curd together in a bowl and whisk it
Now add all the ingredients in the curd mixture and mix .
Serve it immediately or serve chilled after an hour.
VARIATION
We can also temper it in ghee with asafoetida + jeera+ cashew etc.
