RAW PAPAYA MOONG DAL CURRY / GREEN PAPAYA DAL [ southindian style ]

Raw papaya dal recipe

Raw papaya has exceptional amounts of carotenoids, in fact more than carrots and tomatoes. Also, the carotenoids found in raw papaya are more bio-available to the human body.

 It has a lot more active enzymes than its ripe version. The two power-packed enzymes of raw papaya include chymopapain and papain. Both enzymes help breakdown protein fats and carbohydrates.

The fibre  acts like an internal broom that helps anyone with chronic constipation, acidity, piles and diarrhoea. The enzyme latex present in raw papaya gives your body a sparkling cleanse from the inside.

INGREDIENTS

  • Raw papaya – 2 cup  [ peeled and chopped intoi small cubes ]
  • moong dal – 2 tbsp
  • masoor dal – 2 tbsp
  • Tomato finely chopped – 1
  • Green chilli – 2
  • Turmeric pwdr – ¼ tsp
  • Freshly grated coconut – ¼ cup
  • Jeera – 1 tsp
  • Oil – 1 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  • Red chilli – 2
  • Curry leaves – few
  • Onion finely chopped – 1 small or – 8 shallots
  • Asafoetida – a generous pinch
  • Finely chopped coriander leaves for garnish

PREPARATION

  1. Grind coconut + 1 green chilli + cumin seeds to a smooth paste. Add 2 tbsp water while grinding
  2. Peel the skin, discard the seeds if any and chop raw papaya into medium or small sized pieces.

METHOD

In a cooker, take chopped raw papaya + moong dal + masoor dal and wash it Add chopped tomato +  green chilli + turmeric powder + 1 cup water and salt.

Pressure cook for 2 or 3 whistles.

Once the pressure releases , open the cooker and add the coconut  paste.

Mix well , adjust hot water if very thick .

Stir and boil for 2 or 3  minutes on low flame.

Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, when it sizzles

Add red chillies + curry leaves + asfeotida

Add the onions and curry leaves.

Saute until onions till light brown .

Add the curry and mix well .

Off the flame when it comes to a boil .

Garnish with coriander leaves .

NOTES

  1. We can try it with only urad dal and also tuvar dal .
  2. Makes sure not to overcook the vegetable. You can cook dal, vegetable separately also and make kootu.
  3. My chopped papaya came around roughly 2 & 1/2 cups.
  4. Skip onion if you do not like. But it lends a nice aroma.
  5. For variation , we can roast the coconut and add 1 tsp sambar pwdr while grinding
