How to use and maintain pressure cooker / how to avoid overflowing while pressure cooking /pressure cooking guide

The pressure cooker is an essential time-saver for cooking many foods. It can reduce cooking times by up to 70 percent, or more.

GASKET  [ rubber sealing  ring ] -The seal prevents steam from escaping, and allows the pressure to build.

After use remove the gasket, clean it, and dry it.

Over time, the rubber  dries out and shrink, which causes it to loose the ability to seal. If it becomes loose ,then buy a new one .Atleast once in a year buy a new gasket. Keep checking the gasket for any cracks or wear and tear .We  can grease the gasket with oil to prolong life .Store the gasket in freezer.

VENT TUBE – It is important to keep the vent clean and free of clogs.

VALVE – If the normal escape of steam is prevented due to blockage of the vent tube, or if there is insufficient water in the cooker, the valve contains a fusible alloy that melts to release steam and prevent an explosion.the valve can be replced .

HOW TO AVOID  OVER FLOWING WHILE PRESSURE COOKING – First allow the food in the cooker to boil ,then place the lid and once the pressure starts coming out ,place the whistle .

WHY STORE COOKER GASKET IN FRIDGE OR  FREEZER – While in use , the cooker heats up and so does the gasket. Heating causes expansion and makes the gasket fit loosely on the inner rim of the pressure cooker lid. If reused in this condition, it doesn’t apply the desired pressure seal. Cooling it to very low temperatures allows the gasket to return to the original, intended dimension.

POINTS TO REMEMBER

  1. Never fill the cooker more than half full. When cooking other items, you can fill the cooker up to three-quarters full.
  2. Once the cooking is done ,don’t open immediaterly .allow the pressure to release on its own and then open . Food continues to cook, even after the heat is turned off.
  3. If you want to open before the pressure is released ,then un cold water over the top of the lid.Now check if pressure is there or not by lifting the whistle .But avoid doing this .
  4. Always before opening check by lifting the whistle first .
  5. Water level has to be just one inch above the food .
  6. Never add lot of water .
  7. For mutton add just half cup water ,as meat releases its own juice .
  8. Don’t over soak the lentils .
  9. FOR CLEANING a stained cooker pot ,boil water + lemon or citric acid for 8 to 10 mins and then scrub and clean.
  10. We can also scrub stained cooker pot with vinegar and baking soda to remove the stains.
  11. Always while cleaning used cookers ,scrub near the handles.Remove the whistle and clean well.
  12. Also while cleaning ,remove the gasket and clean well.
  13. For veges 1 or 2 whistles is enough.
  14. For chicken 2 or 3 whistles on medium flame are enough .

COOKING OF CHOLE /MEAT – always cook on medium flame upto first whistle and then reduce flame to lowest and cook for 10 mins.
