Jaggery tea /gur ki chai
JAGGERY TEA / GUD KI CHAI / GUR KI CHAI
Jaggery tea or gud ki chai is a traditional Indian tea with jaggery and spices. This tea has a deep earthy flavor from jaggery and tastes delicious. There are a lot of substitutes for diabetes patients such as stevia and sugar-free capsules, however, for those who aren’t diabetic, the best option is jaggery. Sugar is the refined product of sugarcane whereas jaggery is a more natural and less processed sweetener. It also adds several other benefits as well.
BENEFITS OF JAGGERY –
- It is healthier than sugar as it contains a number of vitamins and minerals like phosphorous, iron, magnesium and potassium. Consuming jaggery in winters helps in generating enough heat in the body, keeping you warm inside.

Eating portions of jaggery every day will increase the intake of iron, which helps red blood cells to carry oxygen from your lungs and transport it throughout your body. It’s super useful for people suffering from anemia .
- Jaggeryhas a positive effect on digestion, especially for people who suffer from constipation. It’s ideal to have your morning tea made with jaggery as it speeds up digestion after the long hours of fasting..

[ Sonth imparts a deep color and a fragrant aroma to the tea ]
Increase the flame to medium ,and add milk.
As tea begins to boil, reduce the heat and continue to simmer for 1 min .
Turn off the heat and add grated jaggery to the tea and quickly stir. Ensure that jaggery is grated so that it dissolves quickly in tea (avoid lumps).
strain and serve the tea hot .
NOTE –
- Texture of Jaggery must be Hard and not soft and crumbly . Jaggery must not be salty or bitter .Dont use yellow jaggery , as they are processed .
- I have used only ginger .You can add cardamom or crushed pepper or chai masala .
- Adjust water and milk quantity as per your taste .
- Jaggery when boiled together with milk will curdle, because the refining process of jaggery would have undergone a process with bleach to give the attractive yellow colour. It is best to boil teawater with jaggery eperately and then simply mix with boiled milk.
