SOUTH INDIAN STYLE SNAKE GOURD CHANA DAL CURRY / PUDALANGAI KOOTU RECIPE
Snake Gourd Kootu is a delicious no onion no garlic recipe that is prepared adding dal and coconut mixture. It is a popular traditional dish that is commonly cooked in most South Indian homes. This is a very flavourful and delicious recipe you can make and serve with rice. Tastes wonderful when served hot.
Kootu is a mild preparation we make with fresh veggies and lentils combination.
Bottle gourd is a vegetable high on water and is a rich source of vitamin C, K and calcium. It helps in maintaining a healthy heart and brings down bad cholesterol levels. The juice is also beneficial for diabetic patients as it stabilizes the blood sugar level and maintains blood pressure .

INGREDIENTS
- Snake gourd chopped – 3 cup
- Chana dal – 1/4 cup
- Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
- Salt – to taste
- Fresh grated coconut – ¼ cup
- Green chilli – 3 or 4 or as per taste
- Jeera – 1 tsp
- Oil / coconut oil – 1 tbsp
- Mustard – 1 tsp
- Curry leaves – a sprig
- Hing / asafoetida – a generous pinch
PREPARATION
- Wash the veggie first. Trim the edges then Scrap the outer white skin of the snake gourd , discard soft seed part . Chop the into small pieces .
- Grind the coconut + green chilli + jeera + little water into fine paste.
- Clean , wash rinse and soak the dal for minimum 3 to 4 hrs or overnight .
- Then pressure cook dal along with salt + enough water + turmeric powder + snake gourd for 2 or 3 whistles .Once pressure releases , open and give a nice mix .

Add the coconut paste to the cooked dal and give a nice mix . Adjust hot water if needed.
*It should not be of thin consistency .
Heat oil in a pan.
Add mustard seeds and let it crackle .
Add curry leaves + asafoetida and give a stir .
Add the dal and give a nice mix and off the flame .
Serve with hot rice with side accompaniments or even chapatti .
NOTES
Instead of chana dal we can use moong dal or toor dal. In that case no need to soak the dal for long time .
