CHANA DAL PULAO

INGREDIENTS

  • Chana dal – ½ cup
  • Rice – 1 cup
  • Onion chopped – 1
  • Tomato chopped – 1
  • Few whole garam masala – jeera ,clove ,cardamom,staranise,black pepper ,cinnamom ,bayleaves
  • Oil + ghee – 1 tbsp or 1 ½ tbsp
  • Ginger garlic paste – 2 tsp
  • Green chilli – 2
  • Finely chopped coriander leaves + mint leaves – ¼ cup
  • Turmeric pwdr – ¼ tsp
  • Everest chana masala – 1 ½ tsp OR any garam masala – 1 tsp
  • Salt to taste

PREPARATION

  1. Clean wash ,rinse and soak the rice for 30 mins.
  2. Wash , rinse and soak the dal for 2 – 3 hrs or you can pressure cook the dal till ¾ done .[ to reduce soaking time ,soak in hot water]

METHOD

Heat oil + ghee in a pan /cooker ,add the whole garam masala and let it splutter .[ don’t burn it ]

Add onion and fry till light brown .

Add ginger + garlic paste and fry till raw smell leaves .

Add tomatoes and cook till soft.

Add coriander + mint leaves + chilli and fry till it shrinks .

Add turmeric + chana masala + salt and fry for few secs .

Add the rice + dal , mix well and stir  fry for a minute .

Add 2 cup of water and allow it to boil .

Once it starts boiling ,lower the flame to lowest ,cover the lid and cook for 12 – 15 mins .

Cook till complete water is evaporated.

Allow it to rest.

Take a fork and fluff it.

Garnish with coriander leaves

Serve with raita /salad / side dish /pickle /curd /papad etc

NOTES

  1. You can try the same recipe with kabuli chana ,use cooked kabuli chana white or brown or use any bean .
  2. Instead of garam masala pwdr or chana masala pwdr  ,  you can use ready made biryani masala pwdr and your chana biryani will be ready.
  3. I cooked it in the pressure cooker without whistle.
  4. If using whistle then pressure cook upto 2 whistles.
  5. You can omit tomato and use ½ lemon juice.
  6. The dal should be whole , it should not become mushy or it will look like khichdi.
  7. Y not gv twist by adding pav bhaji masala .
