Mango dal
MAMIDIKAYA PAPPU, MANGO DAL RECIPE
Mamidikaya is the telugu word for mango & pappu is dal. Mamidiakaya pappu is a dish made with raw mango, dal, chilies & spices.
Raw Mango Dal is a dish of yellow lentils cooked with unripe mango pieces. The tangyness of raw mangoes gives a delicious flavor to the lentils.
Basically it is a regular dal , but instead of tomato we are using mango. You can make using any dals or a combination of 2 or 3 dals .
Raw mango is high in vitamin C, calcium, magnesium which is useful for releasing toxins from the body. Raw mangoes are also high in niacin, which helps boost cardiovascular health. Healthy cholesterol levels lower the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and heart attacks.
INGREDIENTS
- 1 raw and unripe mango
- ¾ cup toor dal
- ¼ cup chopped onion / shallots
- 1 or 11/2 tbsp freshly crushed garlic
- 1 or 11/2 tsp or as per taste red chilli powder
- ¼ tsp turmeric powder
- ½ or 1 tsp jaggery [ optional ]
- Salt to taste
- 1 tbsp ghee /oil
- ½ tsp Mustard
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 2 red chilli broken
- Generous pinch of asafoetida
- Few curry leaves
METHOD
Clean , wash and rinse the dal . Soak for 15 mins .
Peel the mango , slice and chop into big cubes. Discard the seed .
Take toor dal + turmeric + jaggery and salt. Keep the mango with few tbsp. Water in a separate bowl .
Pressure cook for 3 whistles with 2 cups water.
Once pressure releases by itself, open and mash only the dal .
Add the cooked mango in it .
Add 2 cups of hot water .Adjust water as per the consistency you want .
Heat a pan with ghee /oil and splutter mustard + jeera .
Add crushed garlic and stir fry till brown .
Lower the flame and add red chilli powder .
Give a nice mix .
Immediately transfer to the cooked dal and give it a mix.
Bring it to a boil and off the flame .
Serve hot with rice and other side dishes.
