WHEAT FLOUR IDIYAPPAM

WHEAT FLOUR IDIYAPPAM / WHEAT FLOUR STEAMED SEVAI / WHEAT STRING HOPPERS / GOTHUMAI IDIYAPPAM

Enriched wheat flour may be a good source of iron, thiamine, niacin, calcium, and vitamin B6, in addition to the above nutrients. Whole wheat may be a decent source of several vitamins and minerals, including selenium, manganese, phosphorus, copper, and folate.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup wheat flour
  • Boiling water as needed
  • Salt as needed
  • 1 tsp ghee
  • 1 cup shredded coconut

METHOD

Take the flour in a pan over low heat for 5 minutes grainy in texture . [ Don’t over toast or burn the flour –  the colour of the flour should not change ]

Transfer to a big plate , add salt + ghee .

Boil water till it starts boiling rigorously.

Add boiling water  little by little to the roasted flour .

Start mixing it with a laddle.

Once you are able to handle the hot mixture start kneading with clean hands.

Keep water to boil in a steamer for steaming the sevai .

 Take the chakli press and grease it .

Fill in the dough .

Press the sevai on the grease plate in a circular motion .

Keep the plates in the steamer pot and steam for 10 mins till done.

 Allow to rest for 1 min .

Remove and garnish with freshly grated coconut.

 Serve with any veg kurmas or stews or non veg gravies.

We like the simple version with just grated coconut and sugar .

NOTES

  1. Instead of roasting the flour , you can steam the wheat flour well for 10 minutes .
  2. You can make sevai upma by just giving  a simple tadka with oil + mustard seeds + curry leaves  + onion.
  3. You can add ¼  cup of rice flour or jowar or bajra or any millets flour to the wheat flour .
