INGREDIENTS

  • Whole green moong dal – 1/2 cup
  • Freshly grated Coconut – ¼ cup
  • Powdered or grated jaggery – 3 OR 4 TBSP OR AS PER TASTE
  • Cardamom – 1
  • Ghee – 2 tsp
  • Mustard seeds + urad Dal – 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves – few
  • Red chilli – 2 broken
  • Asafoetida – a pinch

PREPARATION

  1. Clean , wash ,rinse and soak the dal for min 7 hrs or over night . To make it more nutritious , i also sprouted it for 12 hrs.
  2. Pressure cook the dal upto 1 whistle till soft .[ be careful the dal should be soft and whole not mushy, instead of cooker ,cook it in a pan with enough water ]
  3. Drain the excess water and keep aside .

METHOD

Add cardamom to the cooked moong and give a mix .

Heat ghee in a pan , add mustard seed and allow it to crackle .

Add curry leaves + red chilli + asafoetida and fry for few secs.

Add the cooked moong dal , mix well and stir fry for a minute. Stir till the moisture evaporates. 

Add the jaggery and mix well. Stir until the jaggery blends well.

Add coconut stir for a min and off the flame.

Serve as snack for tea time.

NOTES

  1. Instead of powdered jaggery, you can add jaggery syrup – take jaggery in a pan , add enough water to immerse the jaggery , boil it till jaggery dissolves, strain it . [ by doing so we remove the impurities from the jaggery ]
  2. You can also omit tempering –  just mix boiled moong dal + coconut + jaggery.
