Cabbage chana dal stir fry southindian style
CABBAGE CHANA DAL STIR FRY / CABBAGE CHANA DAL PORIYAL
INGREDIENTS
- Cabbage – 4 cup grated
- Chana dal – 1/4 cup
- Oil – 1 tbsp
- Onion – 1 finely chopped
- Mustard seeds + urad dal – 1 tsp
- Curry leaves – few
- Green chilli – 3 chopped or as per taste
- Freshly grated coconut – ¼ cup
- Salt as per taste
PREPARATION
- Discard the outer covering of the cabbage and chop it finely or grate it. [I have grated]
- Soak the chana dal for few hrs or overnight . Cook it with little salt till soft .[ don’t overcook ]
METHOD
Heat oil in a pan.
Add mustard seeds + urad dal and let it crackle .
Add curry leaves + onion + chilli and fry till onions turn translucent.
Add the cooked chana and give a nice mix
Add the grated cabbage + salt and mix well.
Sprinkle little water if required .
Cover and cook for 2 or 3 minutes. [stir in between ]
Don’t overcook the cabbage should have a crunch .
Open the lid , give a nice stir .
Add coconut , mix well and off the flame.
Serve as side dish for chapatti or rice with any gravy or just as a salad .
* I have not added water while cooking ,as the cabbage is grated finely ,it cooks fast – if you have chopped then sprinkle little water .
NOTES
- It does not take much time to cook as it is grated.
- Coconut oil enhances the flavour.
- You can also add turmeric pwdr.
