ANDHRA STYLE TOMATO PEANUT CHUTNEY FOR IDLI AND DOSA

Peanut Tomato Chutney is a popular chutney recipe from Andhra Pradesh, India. It serves as a great side for South Indian breakfast items like Idli /Dosa/ idiyappam etc . It is a simple and tasty chutney which is made with roasted peanuts, dry red chillies and tomatoes. . The freshness and tanginess of tomato along with the nutty flavour of peanut becomes a great accompaniment for any South Indian Breakfast. This is an no onion and no garlic recipe.

INGREDIENTS

For the chutney

  • 2tomatoes
  • 1 tsp oil
  • ΒΎ or 1 cup  skinless peanut
  • 2garlic
  • 2 – 3or as per taste dried red chillies
  • tiny piece of tamarind
  • Β½ tsp jaggery
  • salt to taste

For the tadka

  • 2tsp oil
  • Β½ tsp mustard seeds +  1 tsp urad dal
  • few curry leaves
  • 1 red chilli

METHOD

Heat 1tsp oil in a pan ,add the red chill fry for few seconds and remove.

Add the peanuts and roast till crisp , remove and keep aside .

Add  chopped tomatoes + salt  , cook till they are soft and pulpy.Allow to cool .

Transfer the peanut + red chilli + tamarind + jaggery + garlic and pulse beat once.

Now add the tomatoes and grind .

Add Β½ to 1 cup of water and grind into smooth mixture .

Adjust water as per the consistency you like – my family likes thin chutney , so I added 1 cup water .

Transfer to a serving bowl .

For the tadka – heat 2 tsp oil in a small pan, add mustard seeds +  urad dal .

Once it crackles add curry leaves and red chilli , give a stir and  pour this over Chutney.

Serve as side accompaniment with any southindian breakfast.

Notes

  1. Instead of frying the tomatoes , blanch it , remove the skin and then use , it gives a smooth texture to the chutney .
  2. Tamarind and jaggery is optional .
