Chow chow poriyal

Chayote, also known as mirliton and choko, is an edible plant belonging to the gourd family.

It also contains folate (which is great for cell division and for pregnant women), vitamin B6 and vitamin K. Minerals like potassium, manganese, zinc and copper are also found in this squash. Chow chow is rich in antioxidants, keeping inflammation at bay and ailments like cancers and joint pains.

INGREDIENTS

  • Chayote / Chow chow – 2 small sized
  • Green chilli – 2 OR 3
  • Oil – 1 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Urad dal – 1 tsp
  • Chana dal – 2 tsp
  • Cumin seeds – ½ tsp
  • Curry leaves – few
  • Asafoetida – a pinch
  • Grated coconut – ¼ cup
  • Sugar – ¼ tsp
  • Salt
  • Water – 3 or 4 tbsp

METHOD

Wash and peel the skin of chow chow , discard the seeds . Chop into small cubes and set aside.

Heat oil in a pan .

Add mustard seeds + urad dal  + chana dal and curry leaves + green chilli .

Add chopped chow chow , mix well and stir fry for a minute .

Sprinkle  3 or 4  tbsp water ,cover and cook till soft .

  • Don’t over cook the vege ,it has to retain shape .

Add salt and sugar , give a mix .

Lastly add the grated coconut  ,give a mix and off the flame .

Serve with rice + dal / sambar + any accompaniments .
