Ellu Chutney also known as the Sesame Seeds Chutney Recipe is one of the popular accompaniment recipes from South India. It is usually made using black sesame. Sesame with its nutty taste and flavour gives a unique taste to this til ki chutney. Serve Ellu Chutney as a side dish..

In addition to containing more nutrients, black sesame seeds have a stronger flavour and more crunch than white sesame seeds that have had their outer hull removed.

Regularly eating black sesame seeds could reduce oxidation in the body, improve blood pressure, and provide antioxidants and other plant chemicals that help fight cancer. Still, more research in humans is needed.

Sesame seeds are a good source of hair nourishing vitamins and minerals such as copper, manganese, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, phosphorus, vitamin B1, amino acids, selenium, melanin, and dietary fiber. Plus, these tiny seeds also contain natural antioxidants – sesamin, sesamolin, and sesamol.

INGREDIENTS:

  • Black sesame seeds / Ellu – ½  cup
  • Dry red chilli – 3 OR 4  or as per taste
  • Jaggery – 1 tsp
  • Tamarind – small piece
  • Garlic – 3
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  • Salt – to taste
  • Water – 3 or 4  tablespoons

METHOD

Heat few drops of oil in apan ,add the red chilli and fry for few seconds till they puff up.Remove and keep aside.

In the same pan dry roast sesame seeds on low flame  . Stir and roast till they splutter and release aroma .

Once done immediately add curry leaves + tamarind and give a nice mix and off the flame .

Allow the roasted ingredients to cool to room temperature.

In a dry mixer, add roasted sesame seeds + dry red chilli + garlic + jaggery
+ salt  and grind it to a powder.

Add 3 or 4 tbsp water and grind it to a  paste.

Serve with rice items like curd rice / rice porridge etc .

You can add little more water and serve this chutney with idli and dosa also .
