Banana stem is very commonly used in Indian cooking . They are consumed both as raw and cooked. It has a crisp texture when consumed raw and soft + firm on cooking .
Banana Stem juice is believed to be nature’s cure to prevent & flush out kidney stones. Banana stem is said to be a diuretic and helps detoxify the body.
The stem juice must be freshly extracted and consumed on an empty stomach. This can be done every day or alternate days or 3 times in a week .
Vazhathandu Juice | Plantain Stem Juice is a fiber rich juice that is packed with lots of nutrients. It also helps prevent high blood pressure, and maintain fluid balance within the body.
BENEFITS OF BANANA STEM –
- Rich in Fiber: Banana stem contains ample amount of fiber, which can prevent constipation and ulcer.
- Detoxification and Digestion: The juice of the banana stem helps in flushing out toxins from the body. It is a diuretic, and one of the most effective ways to cleanse your system from ailments.
- Helps in Weight Loss: Consumed with fibre, banana stem slows down the release of sugar and fats stored in the body’s cells. It also improves metabolism, and contains very few calories
- Managing cholesterol and blood pressure: Rich in Vitamin B6, it has a lot of iron and increases the haemoglobin count. It is enriched with potassium as well, and is effective to treat cholesterol and high blood pressure.
HOW TO BUY BANANA STEM – Try to select fresh ones which are white or light cream with no discolouration in the centre. If the stem is tender it will have less fibre content. The inner stem should not be too big or too small. If it’s too big the it will be more mature and highly fibrous. It becomes difficult to cut such banana stem.
HOW TO CUT – Make slits on all sides of the outer layer of stem and discard this layer.
Continue this step of removing the outer layer until you reach the inner pith. There may be 3 to 4 or 5 such layers .There will also be a thin layer of outer skin attached to inner pith, which has to be peeled off .
Now slice the inner core into roundels .Simply pull out the fibres by rubbing the slices in circular motion.
While chopping them, keep the slices one above the other and chop them fine as per your requirement.
Important – Put these chopped banana stem into tamarind water or lemon water or buttermilk until you use them.
INGREDIENTS
- Chopped banana stem – 1 cup
- Green chilli – as needed
- Buttermilk – 1 cup or as required to dilute the juice
- Salt / black salt to taste
- Roasted jeera pwdr – ¼ tsp or as needed
- Pepper pwdr – ¼ tsp or as needed
METHOD
Transfer the chopped pieces to a mixer grinder and add 1 cup of chaas . Grind this till you get a smooth mixture and no lumps remain.
Strain it .
NOTE – If using tender stem straining the juice can be skipped.
Add salt + roasted jeera pwdr + black pepper pwdr to taste OR use chaas masala pwdr –
NOTE – Add a few teaspoons of the fine pulp (fibre) back into the drink if you wish. This will help cleanse the digestive system a little better.
Serve immediately before the discolouration gets darker.

- For sweet version grind with milk + sugar + cardamom powder
