INSTANT DAL POWDER SAMBAR

DAL POWDER SAMBAR RECIPE

It is a very simple and tasty sambar and needs very less ingredients. All you need is just 15 minutes to make this sambar. It is a perfect side dish for southindian breakfast .

PREPARATION

Dry roast ½ cup of  toor dal or chana dal OR  a combination of both the dals and grind into fine pwdr.

Store the dal powder and use it as needed.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 tbsp roasted toor dal or chana dal powder
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 green chilli
  • Few curry leaves
  • 1 small onion finely chopped or 10 shallots
  • 2  tomato finely chopped or puree
  • ¼  tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tbsp or as required sambar masala pwdr
  • 2 tsp tamarind pulp
  • 1/4 or 1/2 tsp jaggery
  • 1/2 tsp ghee [ optional ]
  • 3 cup water
  • Salt to taste
  • Finely chopped coriander leaves for garnish

METHOD

Heat oil in a pan .

Add mustard seeds and let it crackle .

Add onion + curry leaves + green chilli and stir fry till pink.

Add tomato and stir fry till soft .

Add sambar pwdr + turmeric + dal pwdr and mix well.

Stir fry for a min .

Add water + tamarind pulp + jaggery + salt and mix well  .

Bring it to a boil .

NOTE – If you feel the sambar is thin , just dissolve 1 tbsp dal pwdr in little water and add .

Boil it for 5 mins on medium flame .

Add ghee and give a mix .

Off the flame and garnish with coriander leaves .

The sambar thickens on cooling .

NOTE

  1. Make sure that the onions and tomatoes are soft before adding the besan mixture .
  2. Adjust tamarind as per taste.
  3. boiling time is important to remove the raw smell of tamarind pulp .
  4. The sambar should be watery. If it becomes too thick, add more water and simmer for few minutes.
  5. You can add ½ or ¾  cup of boiled veges
  6. Instead of roasted dal pwdr , you can use besan also – taste and texture may differ .
