BAO STEAMED BUNS RECIPE

Bao is steamed buns and it can be many different shapes and it can be by itself or filled with sweet/savory filling.

INGREDIENTS [ 8 to 10 medium size ]

  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup warm milk
  • 1 ½ tsp instant yeast
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 1/2  cups all purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/8 tsp salt

NOTE – Better use instant yeast

METHOD

Mix warm water + milk + active yeast + sugar +  oil.

Mix well , and allow it to rest for  10 minutes.the mixture will turn frothy .[instead of active yeast we can also use instant ] – [ If using instant yeast no need to activate , use it directly ]

Take the  flour + baking powder + salt in a big bowl. Mix well.

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients mixture. Mix well and knead for 3 to 4 . The dough should be soft but not sticky .

Cover with a plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for 2 hrs until it becomes triple size.

Place the raised dough on a working surface. Roll out into ¼ inch thick sheet using dry flour .

Use a round cutter and cut it .

Apply some oil on the top , and fold in half like a half-moon shape.

Gently press each bao with a roller as shown in the video .

Place each bao on a parchment paper /foil or greased plates .

Arrange Cover with a lid and let it rest for additional 30 mins .

Steam for 8 to 10 minutes in a steamer.  Let it rest in the steamer half opened  for about 2 to 3 minutes ..

Bao is ready to eat.

Serve it wih any stuffing like crsipy mushroom / paneer/chicken etc

We can replace bao with pav in pav bhaji / dabeli etc
