SOUTHINDIAN KARA CHUTNEY FOR IDLI AND DOSA

INGREDIENTS

  • Tomato – 2 Medium size
  • Big onion – 1
  • Garlic cloves – 4 or 5
  • Urad dal – 2  tsp
  • Chana dal – 2 tsp
  • Red chilli – 6 nos ( 4 or 5 – spicy chilli + 3 or 4 Kashmiri chilli
  • Red chilli powder – ½  tsp
  • Tamarind – very small marble size
  • Salt – As needed
  • Coriander leaves or mint leaves – handful [ optional ]
  • Oil – 1 tbsp + 1 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – ¾ tsp
  • Curry leaves – few

NOTE – Adjust red chilli as per taste

METHOD

Heat oil and fry the dals.Dont burn it .

Add  red chilli and give a quick mix.

Add garlic + onion and fry till transparent.

Add chopped tomato + salt and mix well.

Now add tamarind + red chilli pwdr and mix.

Add the coriander or mint leaves and stir fry till it shrinks.

Cover and cook on low flame for 1 min till pulpy .

Cool down and grind to smooth paste by adding water as per the consistency you want .

TrSansfer to a serving bowl

Temper oil + mustard + curry leaves and pour it over kara chutney.

Mix well and serve with idli, dosa or any southindian breakfast items .
