SWEET PIDI KOZHUKATTAI RECIPE

SWEET PIDI KOZHUKATTAI /STEAMED SWEET RICE DUMPLING RECIPE

It is a popular South Indian dumpling made from rice flour +  grated coconut +  jaggery,

Pidi Kozhukattai is a very mild sweet variety . A very easy to make Kozhukattai variety. 

Pidi Kozhukattai is a traditional neivedhyam dish done for Vinayakar Chaturti or even for normal Friday pooja.

INGREDIENTS

  • ½ cup rice flour
  • ½  cup jaggery powdered
  • 3/4 cup water [ water quantity depends on the rice flour quality ]
  • 4 tbsp coconut
  • 1/4 tsp cardamom powder
  • 1 tsp ghee
  • Pinch of salt

METHOD

Take jaggery + water, cook till jaggery completely dissolves.

Off the flame and strain in to a pan.

Bring it to a  boil, add cardamom powder + coconut + ghee.

When the mixture comes to a boil , immediately lower the flame, add rice flour and  mixing well .

Stir and cook look till it forms a lump of dough .Hardly takes few seconds .

Switch off and let it cool down.

When its still warm, grease your hand with ghee and knead into a soft dough  .

Cover the dough with a damp cloth and use , don’t keep it open .

Take a big lemon size  portion , roll it tnto a ball and press with fingers to form impression as shown . We can also use modak moulds and make modak shaped .

Arrange it in a greased steamer plate and steam it for 10 – 12 mins.

The kozhukattais will turn shiny then its perfect to switch off.

Colour of the dumplings depend on the colour of jaggery we used .

Serve Sweet Pidi Kozhukattai hot / warm .

VARIATION – We can add 1 tbsp moong dal also .Dry roast the dal till aromatic .and add it with coconut in the jaggery mixture .

NOTE

Water can be added from 1/2 to 3/4 cup depending on the rice flour quality.

I have used store bough idiyappam flour .
