BANANA STEM STIR FRY / BALE DINDINA PALYA | VAZHAITHANDU PORIYAL

 INGREDIENTS

  • Chopped banana stem  – 2 cup
  • Oil – 1 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves few
  • Red chilli broken – 1
  • Salt  to taste
  • Jaggery / sugar – ¼ tsp [ optional ]
  • Coconut – ¼ cup
  • Red chilli – 1 or 2 or as per taste
  • Turmeric – ¼ tsp
  • Cinnamon – tiny piece
  • Saunf / fennel seeds – 1 tsp

PREPARATION

  1. Grind coconut + cinnamon + fennel seeds + red chilli into a coarse mixture. NOTE – I have added cinnamon + fennel seeds for  adding more flavour. You can skip it .
  2. Discard the outer layers of the banana stem. Cut the core of the banana stem into round slices, remove any fibre and finely chop the banana stem. Keep immersed in a bowl of lemon water or buttermilk .

METHOD

Heat the kadai with oil .

Crackle mustard seeds .Add red chilli + curry leaves and stir fry .

Immediately strain the banana stem from water , gently squeeze and add.

Stir fry for one  minute.

Sprinkle 1 or 2 tbsp water for cooking the stem .Cover and cook till soft .It doesn’t take much time to cook .

The stem become transparent after it gets cooked. To check the doneness, press between your fingers and test or eat and taste.

Lastly add the  coconut mixture and mix well.

Off the flame and transfer to the serving bowl.

Serve it as a side dish.
