INSTANT DRUMSTICK PULI KUZHAMBU

SOUTHINDIAN STYLE DRUMSTICK RECIPE / INSTANT DRUMSTICK PULI KUZHAMBU WITHOUT COCONUT / MURUNGAKKAI KULAMBU

Drumstick helps in purifying the blood of toxins and making our organs function better. They further act as a potent antibiotic agent. Consuming drumsticks on a regular basis may help you streamline blood circulation well. Constantly changing weather and hectic lifestyle takes a toll on the immune system.

Drumsticks are rich in proteins and minerals and are extremely healthy. Since it is rich in calcium and iron and vitamins, consumption of drumsticks helps build strong bones. It purifies blood, improves immune system and helps in digestion.

INGREDIENTS

  • Drumstick – 2
  • Coconut oil / oil – 2 OR 3  tbsp
  • Mustard seeds + jeera – 1 tsp
  • Methi seeds – a pinch
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  • Onion 1 big chopped  or 8 shallots
  • Garlic sliced – 8
  • Tamarind – small gooseberry size soaked in 2 cup hot water and juice extracted
  • Sambar pwdr – 4 or 5 tsp
  • Coriander pwdr – 1 tsp
  • Jaggery – 1 tsp
  • Turmeric – ¼ tsp
  • Rice flour – 2 tsp [ thickening agent ]

METHOD

Add the sambar pwdr + turmeric + coriander pwdr + jaggery + rice flour + salt into the tamarind juice and mix well.

Heat oil in a cooker , add mustard seeds + jeera + methi dana and let it crackle.

Add shallots + garlic + curry leaves and stir fry till translucent .

Add the chopped drumstick and mix well.

Stir fry for a min.

Add the tamarind juice and give a nice stir .

Pressure cook upto 2 whistles on high flame. [ if the drumstick is thin and tender then only one whistle. Don’t overcook the drumstick will become mushy ]

Once done off the flame .

When the pressure releases transfer to a serving bowl.

Let the gravy rest for min 30 mins to 1 hr before serving .

Serve with hot rice drizzle with ghee and any side dishes .

NOTE

  1. I have not added chilli pwdr or chilli , as my sambar pwdr already has.
  2. You can add other veges also like raw banana / potato/brinjal etc
  3. Instead of sambar pwdr , add 1 tsp chilli pwdr + 1 tbsp coriander pwdr .
  4. Adjust spices as per taste and the tanginess of tamarind.
  5. If you are worried about the drumstick getting mushy then cook in a open pot OR place the drumstick in a separate container inside the cooker . After 2 whistles , remove and add the drumstick inside the gravy .
