KERALA FISH CURRY WITH COCONUT MILK / KERALA FISH CURRY RECIPE / COCONUT MILK  FISH CURRY

Kerala style Fish Curry where fish is cooked in a coconut milk based gravy. The colour of this Fish curry is slightly yellowish.  For bright red  colour use Kashmiri red chilli powder.

INGREDIENTS

  • Any Fish  – 300 to 400 grms
  • Coconut Oil – 2 tbsp + 2 tsp
  • Shallots – 6 [ or use 1 small onion ]
  • Ginger – ¼  inch
  • Garlic – 2
  • Green chillies – 2
  • Turmeric powder – ¼  tsp
  • Chilli powder – 2 to 3 tsp or as per taste
  • Coriander powder – 2 tsp
  • Pepper powder – ½ tsp
  • Tomato -1 small
  • Thin coconut milk – 1 ½  cup
  • Thick coconut milk – ¼  cup
  • Kokum or kerala kudampuli  – 2 to 3 piece
  • Salt to taste
  • Mustard seeds – ½  tsp
  • Fenugreek seeds – a pinch
  • Shallots – 3
  • Few curry leaves-  2 sprig

Kudampuli  or Malabar tamarind is specifically used to add sour taste in the authentic Kerala fish curries

PREPARATION

  1. Clean , cut , wash , rinse the fish well. Apply little salt + turmeric + chilli pwdr all over and keep aside for 15 mins.
  2. Wash the kudampuli and soak in ½ cup hot water for 15 mins .
  3. Extract coconut milk .Refer to the recipe here – How to extract Coconut milk at home
  4. Make a coarse paste of shallots / onion + tomato + ginger + garlic.

METHOD

Heat oil in a pan .

Add the onion paste and stir fry till oil separates.

Add the masala powders + salt  and stir fry for a min .

Add the kudampuli with water + thin milk and mix well.

Bring to a boil and let it boil for a min .

Add the marinated fish and give a mix.

 Cocer and cook for 15 mins on medium flame.

Inbetween give a gentle mix.

After 15 mins , lower the flame and the thick coconut milk and give a gentle mix.

Simmer on low flame for a min and off the flame .

Heat oil in a pan .

Add mustard seeds + fenugrrek seeds and let it crackle.

Add shallots + curry leaves.

Stir fry till brown and pour it over the curry and cover it.

Allow the curry to rest for minimum 30 mins before serving .

Enjoy this curry with a bowl of steamed rice/ idli/dosa/idiyappam/appam/ parotta.
