KERALA MATHANGA ERISSERY / PUMPKIN RED COW PEA COCONUT CURRY

Mathanga Erissery  is a mild curry made with pumpkin + cowpeas in a coconut based curry and tempered . It is one of the traditional dish served in Onam Sadya. This is also known as Elisseri in some parts of Kerala.

Black eyed peas also known as Vaenpayar (Malayalam) / Cowpeas or Thattapayaru (Tamil) / Alasandalu (Telugu) / Lobhiya (Hindi) / Alasandee (Kannada) 

You can also make erissery with raw banana ,elephant yam) etc.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups yellow pumpkin cubes
  • ½  cup black eyed peas
  • ¼  tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp or as per taste red chilli powder
  • salt to taste
  • ¼  cup fresh grated coconut 
  • 1 tsp jeera
  • 3 shallots [ optional ]
  • 2 garlic
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • 2 red chillies broken
  • Few curry leaves
  • 2 or 3 tbsp freshly grated coconut for tempering [ optional – adds more flavour ]

METHOD

Soak cowpeas for minimum 4 hours or more .

Grind 1/4 cup coconut + jeera + shallots + garlic with little water to a slightly coarse paste.  Keep aside.

Pressure cook black eyed peas with enough water  + pumpkin + red chilli pwdr + turmeric + salt upto 2 whistles till soft and mashable .

Let pressure release by itself.

Mash it roughly with a ladle.

Add coconut paste and mix well .

Adjust hot water , if the curry is very thick .It should be of medium consistency.

Simmer on low flame for 1 or 2 mins until the raw smell of coconut subsides.

Heat oil and crackle mustard seeds .

Add curry leaves + red chilli , give a mix. [ you can also add shallots in tempering ]

Now lower the flame and add 2 or 3 tbsp coconut.

Fry until coconut turns reddish brown. [ don’t burn it ]

Add this to cooked pumkin mixture. [Roasted coconut gives a great taste and flavour to the erissery ]

Mix well and switch off.

Serve hot with rice and papadam.

NOTE –

  1. Number of whistles depend on for how long you have soaked.
  2. You can cook the pumpkin and cow pea separately ..
