MADURAI STYLE THIN COCONUT CHUTNEY / MADURAI SPECIAL THANNI CHUTNEY RECIPE

Thanni means water in tamil. This thanni chutney is very popular in Madurai district in Tamilnadu. This thanni chutney is very watery in consistency and it is spicy. Thanni Chutney is watery in consistency but very flavorful because of the shallots and spicy . It is a great combo for soft idlis .

INGREDIENTS

  • Freshly grated coconut –  ½ cup
  • Fried grams dal – ¼ cup
  • Shallots – 5
  • Green chilli – 4 or 5 or as per taste
  • Red chilli – 2
  • Garlic – 5 or 6
  • Curry leaves – 2 sprig
  • Tamarind – 1 small piece
  • Salt to taste

INGREDIENTS FOR TEMPERING

  • Oil – 1 tbsp
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  • Broken red chilli – 1
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  • Urad dal – ½ tsp
  • Jeera – ¼ tsp
  • Asafoetida – generous pinch
  • Shallots – 4 thinly sliced [ must ]

METHOD

Take coconut + dal + green chilli + shallots + curry leaves  + red chilli + garlic + tamarind + salt in a mixie jar and grind well without water .

Now add 1 cup water and grind into fine paste .

Transfer to a bowl and add more 1 or 1 ½ cup water and mix well.

Adjust salt as needed.

Heat a small pan with oil .

Add mustard seeds + urad dal and let crackle .

Add red chilli + curry leaves and give a mix.

Add thinly sliced shallots and fry till golden . Don’t burn it .

Pour this over the chutney and give  amix.

Chutney is ready to be served with any southindian breakfast items .

NOTE – as this chutney is watery , we are adding more chilli else it will tasteless .
