 SOUTH INDIAN  STYLE AKHA MASOOR DAL / WHOLE MASOOR DAL  IN ROASTED COCONUT GRAVY.

INGREDIENTS

  • Akha masoor dal – ½ cup (soaked for 30  mins  ]
  • Onion – 1 big finely chopped
  • Ginger garlic paste – 1 1/2 tsp
  • Tomato – 1 finely chopped or puree
  • Chilli powder – 1 tsp or  as per taste
  • Coriander powder – 1 ½  tsp
  • Jeera pwdr – ½  tsp
  • Turmeric powder – ¼  tsp
  • Curry leaves few
  • Oil – 2 tbsp.
  • Salt as per taste

To roast and grind:

  • Coconut grated – 5 or 6 tbsp
  • Fennel seeds – 1  tsp
  • Garam masala pwdr – ¾  tsp

PREPARATION

  1. Roast the coconut till golden brown on medium flame. Add fennel seeds and roast for few seconds . Add garam masala pwdr and give a nice mix and off the flame . Let it cool. Grind it to  fine paste by adding ¼ cup water .

METHOD:
Heat oil in a pressure cooker . Add curry leaves and onions.
Stir fry   till onion turns golden brown.
Add ginger garlic paste and stir fry till raw smell leaves.
Add  tomato puree + salt and cook till it turns soft
Add chilli, coriander, turmeric powder and stir fry for a min .
Add the soaked masoor dal and mix well.
Add 2  cup of  water and Mix well.

Pressure cook on medium flame upto first whistle , now lower the flame to lowest and cook for 8 to 10 mins .

Once done allow to cool and open .

Give a gentle mix .Add ½ cup water or as needed and give a mix . Don’t make very thin .

Now add the grounded coconut paste and simmer for 1 or 2  mins.
Off the flame and garnish  with coriander leaves. 

Serve  hot with puris,Chappati, paratha, pav , bread ,any rice  items etc.

NOTE

  1. Adjust water as per the consistency  you want.
  2. Adjust masalas as per taste .
