Thick red rice poha

MAPPILLAI SAMBA AVAL RECIPE / THICK RED RICE POHA RECIPE

Red poha or flattened red rice is made from red rice. Thick beaten rice absorbs more liquids and hence retains the flavors. This is nutritionally superior when compared to white poha. Red poha is made from red rice with partial husk and hence richer in dietary fiber.

Poha ( Flattened Rice/Rice flakes in English, Aval In Tamil, Avalakki In Kannada, Poha in Hindi) is used to make quick and easy, Instant breakfast recipes like Poha upma, Poha idli , Poha pongal etc.

It is prepared from red rice.It is good for diabetes and is rich in fiber, vitamin B and minerals like calcium, zinc, iron, manganese, magnesium. 

It is one of the most popular rice varieties in tamilnadu, india. The rice is red in colour which contains rich in iron and zinc and it can helps for the production of haemoglobin and myoglobin. 

Mapillai Samba or “Bride Groom Rice” is a native variety of rice, which is red in colour and is grown predominantly in Tamil Nadu. It’s well suited to organic farming because it is hardy and demands little or no fertilisers or pesticides. It is a 160 days crop. Unfortunately, along with other native varieties of rice, mapillai samba has all but disappeared from our farms and markets, making way instead for highly processed, nutritionally inferior white rice. Very few passionate traditional farmers still grow such rice now. This rice comes from Thiruvannamalai in Tamilnadu.

Mappillai samba rice is a good source of iron and zinc. Iron contributes to the production of myoglobin and haemoglobin. Myoglobin and haemoglobin deliver oxygen to muscles and tissues keeping body high in energy level. It also contains pro-anthocyanins which help to reduce cholesterol and hyperglycaemia.

  5. Makes the blood flow faster so that our body gets instant energy
  6. Increases hemoglobin content
  7. Good for diabetics since it is has a low Glycemic Index.
  8. Little ones will achieve better growth

INGREDIENTS

  • Mappillai Samba Aval /thick red rice poha – 1 cup
  • Hot Water – 1 ½ cups
  • Oil – 1 tbsp
  • Freshly grated coconut  – 2 tbsp
  • Red Chilli  broken – 2
  • Mustard Seeds – ½  tsp
  • Urad dal – 1tsp
  • Gram dal – 1 tsp
  • Curry Leaves-Few
  • Salt to taste
  • Coriander leaves finely chopped for garnish

METHOD

Wash the poha to remove the impurities . [ no need to soak ]

Heat oil in apan , add mustard seeds and let it crackle .

Add curry leaves ,dals and red chilli.

Stir fry till dals become golden .

Add the washed poha and give a nice mix.

Stir fry for a min .

Add hot water and mix well .

Adjust salt .

Bring to a boil .

Cover and cook on medium flame till the poha is cooked completely and there is no moisture .

It takes roughly 8 to 10 mins depending on the quality of poha . My poha was bit thick.

Open the lid, give a gentle mix and garnish with coriander leaves and coconut.

Off the flame and serve hot for breakfast.
