UDUPI STYLE POHA / AVALAKKI UPKARI / HACHIDA AVALAKKI

Avalakki Upkari | Poha upkari a no cook aval based Udupi style recipe, served for breakfast or as tea time snack.

INGREDIENTS – [ 1 cup – 250 ml ]

  • Thin poha – 2 cup
  • Finely grated jaggery –  ½ cup or as per taste
  • Very finely chopped onion – 1 [ optional , it adds crunch  ]
  • Freshly grated coconut  – ½ or ¾  cup
  • Rasam powder – 2 OR 3 tsp or as per taste [ Use MTR rasam pwdr ]
  • Salt to taste
  • Coconut oil or any oil – 2 tsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  • Urad dal – ½ tsp
  • Curry leaves few
  • Green chilli slit or broken red chilli – 1
  • water – 2 or 3 tbsp

METHOD

In a big bowl take  jaggery + rasam powder +  grated coconut +  onion + salt and mix well by mashing with clean hands . This helps in releasing moisture , which helps in making the poha soft .

Now add the thin nylon poha and mix well with hands. NOTE – if you feel its dry , then you can drizzle 1 or 2 tsp of water .

 Cover and keep aside for 5 to 10 mins .

Heat oil in a small pan .

 Add mustard seeds + urad dal and let it crackle.

Add curry leaves + red chilli and give a stir.

Pour this over the poha nad give a nice mix.

Ready to serve ..

NOTE – Instead of water , you can use tamarind juice .
