HYDERABAD SPOT IDLI / TAWA IDLI / STREET FOOD

These idlis are quite famous in Hyderabad. 

Spot idli recipe is a spicy idli made on tawa without idli stand and steaming. The idli is prepared on the spot hence it is named spot idli.

Tawa idli a delicious South Indian snack that is incredibly easy to make and usually served with sambar or chutney. The batter is poured on a hot tawa or a griddle over masala and cooked on both sides till crispy.

INGREDIENTS AS REQUIRED

  • Fermented idli batter [ use any idli batter ]
  • Onion finely chopped
  • Tomato finely chopped
  • Fresh coriander leaves finely chopped
  • Masala powder as per taste – red chilli pwdr  + garam masala pwdr + coriander pwdr
  • Salt to taste
  • Butter

METHOD

Heat a non stick pan or a dosa pan .

In the centre add onion + tomato + coriander leaves + spices + salt + butter and mix well.

Saute for 30-40 seconds.

Taste the masala and adjust the taste .

Divide the masala into 4 parts giving good space in between.

NOTE – if you want you can keep a onion ring . so that the batter doesnt flow away.

Pour little idli batter on top of the masala to cover it .

Sprinkle idi podi all over .

Cover and simmer till the bottom part is cooked .

Now carefully flip over without breaking the idli.

Roast on both sides until it turns golden brown and crisp.

Enjoy spot idli with sambarv , chutney and milagai podi .Serve it as a breakfast or as a snack.

NOTE

  1. We can add masalas of our taste.
  2. We can also try it with pav bhaji masala .
  3. We can also add cooked chicken or mutton or paneer or finely minced veges in the masala .
  4. You can stir fry the masalas separately in a pan and then make spot idlis from it .
