COCONUT SHELL IDLI RECIPE

INGREDIENTS

Cooking is not just about following the recipes. It is more about your perception of a dish , creativity , innovation and  a process guided by instinct and sensibility. One should know to play with a recipe . We can always use alternative ingredients or a different technique etc .

Here we are using an alternative vessel for steaming the idlis without idli moulds. You don’t always need fancy equipment and tools to make out perfect tasty delicacies.

So lets give a new look to our everyday breakfast item . Exchange  the same idli mould for coconut shells.

It is just that the shell has to be cleaned well and smoothed by scraping off any residues of coconut using a spoon . For smooth surface you can use a sand paper .You can keep the shells in sun for few days for easy scraping of the residues .

The coconut shell can be reused for multiple times after washing and drying it.

INGREDIENTS

  • Idli steamer pot
  • Cleaned coconut shells

METHOD

Take the coconut shell and clean it well. Scrape of the residues using a spoon .if you want smooth edges then use a sand paper.Wash it well .If you don’t clean the shells well , the idlis will be brown in colour .

Take the coconut shells and grease it well with oil .

Pour the batter .

Fome big idlis , pour 2 ladles of idli batter and for regular idli size just pour 1 ladle .

Arrange the shells on a plate as shown.

Once the water starts boiling in the steamer , place the plate inside and cover it .

Steam the idlis till done.

For 1 ladle batter it will take 10 to 12 mins and for 2 ladles it will take upto 18 to 20 mins.

Once done off the flame and let it rest for 1 min.

Now run a knife around the edges .

Tap the shell to loosen the idli.

Shell idlis are ready to be served.
