KERALA STYLE PARIPPU CURRY FOR ONAM SADYA /KERALA DAL CURRY RECIPE

Kerala Parippu Curry is a delicious moong dal curry ,  It is one of the popular recipe in Kerala made using dal and it is one of the main dish as part of Onam Sadya.

Parippu curry is a comforting meal when served with rice accompanied by few more veg side dishes like  veggie thoran, pacchadi ,aviyal , pickle and papaddums etc .

You can either use moong dal or tuvar dal to make the recipe.

(For sadya, it is made using whole moong dal/green gram. The green gram is roasted, crushed and outer skins are removed and then it is used to made parippu curry.)

For sadya turmeric and garlic  is not added .

INGREDIENTS ( for 4 )

  • Spilt green gram dal/yellow moong dal – ½  cup
  • Turmeric powder – a pinch [ optional ]
  • Grated coconut –  2 or 3 tbsp
  • Green chilli – 1 finely chopped  
  • Cumin seeds – 1/4 tsp
  • Garlic – 1 finely chopped  [ optional ]
  • Salt – To taste
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig

METHOD

Clean , wash and rinse the dal well . Transfer to a strainer and drain out all the excess water .

Dry roast the dal  in a  pressure cooker over medium flame for 3 to 4 mins . Stir continuously so that it doesn’t stick to the bottom .

Add 1 cup water + turmeric + salt  + chilli + garlic  and pressure cook for  2 whistles .

Grind the grated coconut + cumin seeds  to a very fine paste , by adding ¼ cup water .

Allow the pressure to release on own . Open the pressure cooker and mash the parippu slightly with the back of a spoon  .

Add 1  cup hot water and adjust salt if required and mix . [ adjust water as needed – the dal thickens on cooling ]

Add the coconut paste to the cooked dal. Bring to a boil and simmer for 1 min and off the flame .

Serve this delicious parippu curry with hot matta rice , pappadam and ghee.

NOTE

  1. There is no need to temper .
  2. It is similar to Maharashtian varan .
  3. While making for sadya , don’t add turmeric or garlic .
  4. Garlic is added as a digestive aid .
