Whole masoor dal makhani gravy
WHOLE MASOOR DAL GRAVY/SABUT MASOOR DAL RECIPE
Pulses or lentils are rich in protein, fibre and iron. That’s why, eating dal every day can help you stay healthy and fit. Love it or hate it, but you can’t go without a katori of dal, especially when you’ve grown up in India.
An extremely beneficial dal for health, that goes well when added with any vegetable. It is loaded with protein, fibre, magnesium, calcium, B vitamins and folate that boost overall health. Rich in essential nutrients masoor dal promotes skin health and prevents acne.
INGREDIENTS
- Whole masoor dal – 1 cup
- Onion – 1 chopped
- Tomato – 2 big pureed
- Ginger + garlic paste – 1 ½ tsp
- Turmeric pwdr – ½ tsp
- Red chilli pwdr – 1 ½ tsp or as per taste
- Coriander pwdr – 2 tsp
- Jeera – 1 tsp
- Garam masala pwdr – ½ tsp OR Kitchen king masala – 1 tsp
- Tomato ketchup – 2 tsp
- Sugar – 1/2 tsp
- Oil + ghee – 2 tbsp
- Salt as per taste
- Fresh cream – 2 or 3 tbsp
- Finely chopped coriander leaves for garnish
- We can also add kasoori methi in end
PREPARATION
- Wash and Soak the dal for 30 mins.
- Make a puree tomato + ketchup + sugar
METHOD
Heat oil + ghee in a pan .
Add jeera and let it crackle .
Add the onion and fry till translucent .
Add ginger garlic paste and stir fry till raw smell leaves .
Add tomato puree + and fry till oil separates .
Add chilli pwdr + turmeric pwdr + garam masala + coriander pwdr fry till raw smell leaves .
Add the soaked dal and mix well.
Add 2 ½ or 3 cup water and mix . [ adjust the consistency of gravy as per your want / the gravy thickens on cooling , so adjust water accordingly ]
Pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistles and off the flame .
Allow the pressure to release , open and give a mix.
Add fresh cream and give a mix .
Garnish with coriander leaves.
Serve hot with basmati rice, jeera rice , naan , khulcha etc accompanied by lemon salad ,papad and onion rings.
NOTES
- Don’t use sour tomatoes.
- You can also add kasoori methi pwdr in the end.
- Always add hot water to the gravies, to make it thin .
