BLACK URAD RICE DAL PORRIDGE /COMFORT FOOD / ULUNDHU KANJI

Ulundhu kanji is one of the popular recipes in Tamilnadu. 

Black urad dal has a lot of health benefits and is very good for bones. It very nutritious and is packed with numerous health benefits. It is extensively used in many culinary preparations in India like making dal, dosa, idli, urad dal balls, urad dal rice, vada etc. It is a great protein source for vegetarians.

Black gram is very nutritious as it contains high levels of protein, potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron and vitamin B. As it is a rich source of iron, it is especially good for women’s health. Traditionally it was given when girls attain puberty as it is said to strengthen the uterus. It also helps boost milk supply in lactating mothers.

It has a good amount of potassium that is meant to boost blood circulation, thereby eliminating chances of damage on the arterial walls. Enriched with the maximum amount of magnesium, fibre, urad dal can keep the cholesterol levels under check.

INGREDIENTS

  • ¼ cup black urad dal
  • ¼ cup rice
  • ¼ cup coconut grated or ½ cup coconut milk
  • ¼ tsp methi dana
  • ¼ tsp jeera
  • 5 garlic
  • Salt to taste

METHOD

Wash the rice well and keep aside .

Dry roast Urad dal / black gram for just one minute. [ don’t over roast, else it will not cook properly  ]

Immediately add 3 cup water +  washed rice + fenugreek seeds + garlic + salt and mix well .

Pressure cook for 5  whistles on medium flame.

Once done, mash it with aladle .

Add hot water or milk to adjust consistency as per your wish .Adjust water accordingly as it thickens after cooling .

Adjust salt.

Add grated coconut / coconut milk and mix well.

Serve hot .

Serve with any thogayal or any side dishes

NOTES

  1. We can use  whole black urad dal or split ones too.
  2. Some add dry ginger pwdr .
