STEAMED KERALA NENDRAN BANANA /STEAMED ETHAM PAZHAM

Nendran Banana/Etham Pazham/Kerala Banana is one of the superfoods 

Nendran bananas are rich in vitamin C, which is an essential nutrient that helps boost immunity. It also contains antioxidants that can help protect the body from free radical damage. Helps with iron absorption: Nendran bananas are rich in vitamin C, which can help increase iron absorption in the body.The potassium in this banana will help you prevent kidney stones and ulcers.

Steamed nendrans are a regular staple food for all Keralaites. It is extremely filling and a very simple recipe.

Steaming the Bananas brings out the astringent properties in them, makes them easily digestible and all the more it suits for a light and nourishing meal.  Not all bananas are suitable for this recipe . Kerala Nendhra Banana are steamed bananas , as they are bigger in size with a thick and firm flesh. It has a wonderful golden yellow colour with a sweet taste.

Steamed nendran  banana puree is a very healthy and nutritious baby food made by mashing steamed nendran banana. It is suitable 6+ month old babies and promotes weight gain & provides the necessary nutrients for a healthy growth.

METHOD

Take  nendran bananas and  cut both the ends. Slice into 2 pieces and place them in the steamer.

Steam for 5 to 10 minutes. Steaming time depends on how ripe the bananas are .

Don’t over steam .

The skin would turn black and would start to split at places.

Insert a knife and check if its cooked.

Allow it to cool for 5–10 minutes.

Peel and serve.

NOTES

  1. For babies less than one year remove the central black seed portion and offer. Milk or water is added just to thin the consistency for easy feeding.
  2. The bananas should not be very firm or very  ripe.
  3. If it is too ripe , then no need to steam .
  4. Steaming enhances the taste and softens the fruit.
  5. Remove the centre stalk for babies below one year.
  6. Don’t puree it in mixie as it would be too gooey . Just mash well with your hands or spoon.
