HEALTHY BEETROOT APPE

 Appe are round fritter like dish, where the batter is made with rava / rice/ lentils or any flours .

Beets are rich in folate (vitamin B9) which helps cells grow and function. Folate plays a key role in controlling damage to blood vessels, which can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. Beets are naturally high in nitrates, which are turned into nitric oxide in the body.

Packed with essential nutrients, beetroots are a great source of fiber, folate (vitamin B9), manganese, potassium, iron, and vitamin C. Beetroots and beetroot juice have been associated with numerous health benefits, including improved blood flow, lower blood pressure, and increased exercise performance.

INGREDIENTS

  • 3 cups of fermented idli batter. [refer to my recipe of idli batter -Batter for soft idli and dosa
  • ½ tsp ginger grated.
  • 1 small onion finely chopped.
  • 1 cup beetroot grated
  • 1 or 2 green chilies finely chopped .
  • 1 tsp crushed fennel seeds [ crush /rub it between your palms ]
  • 1/2 cup coriander leaves chopped finely
  • Salt to taste.
  • Rava – 3 tbsp [ must ]
  • Baking soda – a generous pinch as we are adding rava

METHOD

Mix all the above ingredients [ except baking soda ] well and keep aside for 15 mins.

Keep the appe pan on medium heat.

Once it is hot , add a few drops of oil in each mould.

Now add the baking soda and beat the batter well for a min .

Pour spoonful of the batter leaving some space over the top.

Allow to cook for 2 – 3mins on medium heat.

  • Don’t cook on low flame .Adjust flame between medium and high .

Check it with a wooden stick .Turn  them  and allow the other side to cook.

Cook till it is light golden brown and crispy.

Remove it .

Serve  hot with any chutney, sambar. Kids prefer it with sauce.

NOTES 

  1. While making for kids replace green chilli with pepper  pwdr.
  2. Appe can also be made with dosa batter, rava and medu vada batter.
  3. Some also give tempering to the batter.
  4. instead of oil ,we can use ghee .
  5. If adding beetroot ,squeeze extra juice and add .
  6. more the oil ,crispy the appes .
  7. You can add any ingreidient of your choice in the batter like any spice pwdr etc .
  8. We can use leftover idli batter .
