Healthy drumstick dal for kids
HEALTHY DRUMSTICK DAL FOR KIDS
Drumstick loaded with iron, calcium and essential vitamins, fibre and antioxidants fight infections, bolsters immunity and keep diseases at bay.
One of the most important health benefits of drumsticks is that it promotes a healthy bone structure due to the presence of high amount of calcium and iron that not only help build strong bones, but also prevents the loss of bone density, further increasing overall stamina and health.
Drumstick helps in purifying the blood of toxins and making our organs function better. They further act as a potent antibiotic agent. Consuming drumsticks on a regular basis may help you streamline blood circulation well. Constantly changing weather and hectic lifestyle takes a toll on the immune system.
Not just for kids but adults too can reap health benefits of drumsticks and dal by eating drumstick dal. Drumsticks are rich in proteins and minerals and are extremely healthy. Since it is rich in calcium and iron and vitamins, consumption of drumsticks helps build strong bones. It purifies blood, improves immune system and helps in digestion. Lentils such as toor dal are also rich in iron and proteins. Our diet should always be balanced.
INGREDIENTS
- 3 or 4 tender drumsticks
- 1/2 cup toor dal
- 1 Tomato finely chopped
- 1 onion finely chopped
- 4 garlic chopped
- Tiny piece of tamarind
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 2 or 3 or 4 green chilli or as per taste [ add less if making for kids ]
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- 1 dry red chilli broken
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp Jeera (Cumin seeds)
- 1/8 tsp asafoetida
- 1 tbsp oil
- Few Coriander Leaves chopped for garnish
- Salt
PREPARATION
- Wash , cut drumsticks into big pieces and boil them in water till soft [ 8 t0 10 mins ] , then allow it cool, once cooled scrape out the inside pulp carefully with a spoon and keep aside. Don’t throw out the leftover waterv.
- Clean , wash , rinse and soak the dal for 15 mins .Take soaked dal + onion + tomato + garlic + green chilli + turmeric + tamarind + salt + enough water in a pressure cooker pan .
- Pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistles or till dal is cooked. Switch off the gas and wait till pressure from cooker is released on its own. Open the cooker and mash the dal well .
- Add the drumstick pulp and mix well
- Add 2 or 21/2 cup hot water and mix well .- Adjust water as per the consistency you want .
METHOD
Heat oil in a pan .
Add mustard seeds and let it splutter .
Add cumin seed + asafoetida + dry red chillies + curry leaves and fry for few seconds .
Add dal and mix well.
Adjust salt if needed .
Bring to a boil .
Simmer for 2 minutes on low heat.
Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and off the flame .
Serve hot with rice and any side acccompaniments OR just have it plain as a soup .
I served it with pepper mutton – Mutton pepper masala
If making for kids avoid green chilli or add less.
