Brinjal gothsu

BRINJAL GOTHSU / BRINJAL SIDE DISH FOR SOUTHINDIAN BREAKFAST

Gothsu is a famous South Indian side dish for idli, dosa and most popularly paired with  pongal. There are different type of gothsu recipes and the most sorted or preferred is the one made with Brinjal/ eggplant which suits perfectly for  southindian breakfast menu .

BRINJAL GOTHSU / BRINJAL SIDEDISH FOR SOUTHINDIAN BREAKFAST

INGREDIENTS

  • Brinjal – 3 nos ( medium)
  • Chopped onion – 1
  • Green chillies – 4 or 5 or as per taste
  • Tomato chopped – 1
  • Tamarind – small marble size
  • Moong dal – 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder – a generous pinch
  • Sambhar pwdr – 2  tsp
  • Salt
  • Oil – 1 OR 2  tbsp
  • Mustard seeds + Urad dal – 1 tsp
  • Rice flour or idli /dosa batter – 1 tsp + ¼ cup water  [ optional – it is used to thicken the gravy ]
  • Coriander leaves – to garnish
BRINJAL GOTHSU RECIPE

METHOD

Soak the tamarind in ½ cup hot water and extract the juice

Wash , wipe and chop the brinjal into small cubes .keep it soaked in water till use .

Heat oil in a cooker.

Add mustard seeds + urad dal and let it crackle .

Add onion + curry leaves + green chilli and fry till translucent .

Add tomato + salt and fry till tomatoes soften .

Add sambar pwdr + turmeric + asfoetida and give a mix .

Add the brinjals and stir fry for a minute.

Add the moong dal and give a mix .

Add tamarind juice and mix well.

Add ½ cup water and mix well .

Allow it to boil .

Cover it and pressure cook on lowest flame upto 1 or 2 whistles

Once the pressure releases ,open the cooker and give a mix.

Add the batter mixture and give a nice mix.

Cook on medium flame for 1 min.

Off the flame garnish with coriander leaves .

Serve hot as a side dish for any southindian breakfast like Pongal / dosa / idl / etc
